About Cirta Tooth

Cirta is a highly specialised Low Vision and CVI Optometrist with over 20 years of experience in supporting adults and children with visual difficulties related to eye and brain conditions. She has completed her Masters in Clinical Optometry (distinction) in 2023 at Cardiff University and holds a Professional Certificate in Paediatric Eye Care and a Higher Certificate in Low Vision (Student Award).

 

Cirta is a regular author of educational articles for eye care professionals and she has a number of peer-reviewed papers accepted in professional journals. These can be viewed in our 'Publication' section. She provides teaching and training for professionals within the sight loss, health- and education sectors and she engages with local patient support groups. She divides her clinical time between Cameron Optometry and the NHS Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion. At Cameron Optometry, she offers Low Vision and Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) assessments.

What Makes Cirta Tooth Unique

Cirta Tooth has had a passion for supporting people with a visual impairment since she was an undergraduate student in her home country, The Netherlands. Early in her career, she decided to specialise in low vision and subsequently in cerebral vision impairment (CVI). She has over 2 decades of experience in working for the hospital eye service, where she works alongside ophthalmologists, orthoptists and other experts in the macular service, the paediatric clinic and the low vision clinic. She has had the privilege to be mentored by a number of leading experts in the field of low vision and cerebral vision impairment. Over the years, she has built a strong network within the sight loss sector.

NHS Lothian: Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion

Cirta Tooth works for NHS Lothian since 2005. Initially, she worked in the Macular clinic and the Low Vision clinic. She currently works in the Low Vision clinic and the Paediatric clinic. As Clinical Lead for the Low Vision clinic she has developed the clinic over the years and introduced a more holistic approach to Low Vision. She also puts a lot of effort into making both clinics more inclusive, particularly for children with additional support needs and adults with complex needs.

Macular Society

Cirta Tooth has a professional membership with the Macular Society. This charity offers support for people with macular disease. The website offers updates on the latest research as well as patient information about the condition, about available support and events. Cirta Tooth is involved in the local support group meetings in Edinburgh and has been invited to play her fiddle for their annual Burns Night Supper for a number of years. She enjoys getting to know the people in her local community.

Cardiff University: Optometry and Vision Science

Cirta Tooth completed her Masters in Clinical Optometry at Cardiff University with distinction in 2023. She completed the following courses: Low Vision (Higher Cert with student Award), Paediatric Eye Care (Prof Cert), Clinical Audit, Clinical Research Skills, Clinical Teaching and Leadership Skills for Optical Professionals. Her final year project was supervised by Dr Maggie Woodhouse from Cardiff University and Prof Rachel Pilling from Bradford University. The topic of her project was raising awareness of cerebral visual impairment.

Hogeschool van Utrecht, The Netherlands

Cirta Tooth completed her undergraduate Optometry course in Utrecht, The Netherlands with a final-year thesis about prescribing Low Vision aids. She had an opportunity to spend time with sight loss charities, such as 'Visio', 'Ergra Low Vision' and 'Bartimeus' as part of her training.
